Top-10 finish for Fox Motorsport at Brands Hatch
The team from Maldon, Essex, are fielding circuit-racing newcomers Fin Green Racing and Team Samra Racing in the series for 14-17-year-old drivers, which supports the British Touring Car Championship.
Fourteen-year-old Fin made tremendous progress on a damp circuit in Saturday’s opening race. From 17th on the grid, he’d climbed to eighth overall and second of the rookie racers with just a lap to go.
Unfortunately, he missed out on a spot on the newcomers’ podium after he was forced off the circuit exiting the final corner; several rivals coming together ahead of him and the Bristol racer having to react in an instant. He finished 16th and eighth of the rookies.
His focus unaffected, Fin performed similar heroics on Sunday and finished a deserved 10th overall and fourth of the rookies.
With minimal winter testing behind him, Keaton focused on gaining experience of both the 1.2-mile Brands Hatch Indy circuit and the 100bhp Ginetta Cars G40 Junior race car.
The Daventry racer consistently improved his times in qualifying to put himself 20th on the grid for Race One and kept his nose clean throughout both encounters while others made mistakes.
Seventeenth overall and ninth among the rookies was his reward on Saturday; results he repeated in the dry on Sunday. Significantly, both Keaton and Fin produced their fastest laps of the weekend towards the end of Race Two as they continued to quicken their pace as their experience built.
The weekend results put Fox fifth in Teams’ Championship while Fin and Keaton lie 11th and 20th in the drivers’ points respectively.
Fin Green said: “It feels great to get a top-10 finish on my debut weekend with Fox Motorsport. I managed to get into a good rhythm in Race One and made my way towards the front, so it was a real shame to miss out on a rookie podium on the last lap after I was given no room on the outside of the track. But everybody in the team kept their heads high and was great to reward them with a top-10 finish on Sunday.”
Keaton Samra said: “It’s been a bit of a baptism of fire because I really didn’t have much experience of Brands Hatch before this weekend. Qualifying and Race One were tough, but in the more consistent conditions of Race Two I was able to make a good start, get stuck in and have a good battle with a few other cars. Every bit of extra experience I can gain at this stage will help me later in the season and I know we can only get faster now as the season continues.”
Paul McNeilly, Team Principal, said: “Everybody at Fox Motorsport has worked incredibly hard to put together a Ginetta Junior team from scratch, so it’s extremely pleasing to take a top-10 finish on our debut weekend with two rookie drivers. Both Fin and Keaton improved their pace throughout the weekend, displayed excellent racecraft and showed the right attitude throughout, despite their lack of experience. Plus we know we’re only going to get faster as the season progresses, so all the signs are positive.”
